The Edmonton Elks have signed Canadian defensive lineman Daniel Joseph.
The six-foot-three, 265-pound edge rusher was released by the Toronto Argonauts on July 30 after dressing for two games and recording one special teams tackle.
Joseph was selected with the fourth overall pick in the 2021 CFL Draft by the B.C. Lions out of North Carolina State University. He chose not to enter the professional ranks that season, returning to the Wolfpack for his final season of NCAA eligibility in 2022.
The Toronto native signed with the Buffalo Bills after going unselected in the 2022 NFL Draft but was waived at the end of training camp. He played for the Seattle Sea Dragons of the XFL in 2023, making eight tackles and two sacks over seven games.
Joseph signed with the Lions in January 2024 but was released before the end of training camp. He dressed for the team’s first preseason game against the Calgary Stampeders but didn’t register any statistics.
The 27-year-old ran a 5.08-second forty-yard dash, 7.45-second three-cone, and 4.45-second short shuttle at his pro day in March 2022 at N.C. State. He also leaped 29 inches in the vertical jump and nine feet in the broad jump. He did not participate in the bench press due to a pectoral injury.
He transferred to North Carolina State in 2020 following a three-year stint at Penn State. He had two productive seasons for the Wolfpack, recording 83 total tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles over 22 games.
Joseph is the cousin of longtime CFL defensive lineman Ese Mrabure and the brother of former first-overall CFL draft pick Faith Ekakitie.
The Elks (3-7) visit the Montreal Alouettes (9-1) with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday, August 25.
