Offensive lineman Brandon Council has retired after making one start for the Saskatchewan Roughriders this season.
The six-foot-four, 310-pound blocker was activated from the team’s suspended list last month and spent one week on the practice roster before starting at right tackle in the team’s loss to Edmonton. Saskatchewan allowed three sacks in the 42-31 defeat.
Council played 12 games for the Riders as a CFL rookie in 2023, making five starts at left tackle and seven starts at right tackle. He was expected to compete for the team’s vacant left tackle spot in training camp this season but didn’t report as he pursued a job opportunity at his alma mater of Auburn University.
The 27-year-old native of Tar Heel, N.C. spent three collegiate seasons with the Tigers where he lined up at all five positions along the offensive line over 27 games. He was named the team’s Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2022 and ended his collegiate career with an appearance in the NFLPA Collegiate All-Star Game, landing him a rookie mini-camp invite from the New York Jets.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-3) will visit the Ottawa Redblacks (5-2) on Thursday, Aug. 8 with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m. EDT.
