Corey Mace is saying there’s a chance Trevor Harris could play for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Week 10 against the Ottawa Redblacks.
“Trevor has officially been cleared to get out there and practice with us. I know he’s super pumped, everybody’s pumped. We are on a short week, but to get him in there and get some reps, it’s something he’s been itching to do for a long time. We wanted to make sure we did it exactly the right way. Credit to his preparation and his patience,” Mace said.
The 38-year-old passer left the Riders’ win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Week 3 shortly before halftime, suffering an MCL sprain in his left knee on a hit from defensive end Nick Usher. He returned to the sideline to start the second half and warmed up wearing a brace but did not take another snap, eventually landing on the six-game injured list.
“He’s still on six-game but I’m not going to eliminate anything. You’re telling me there’s a chance?! Lloyd Christmas,” Mace said with a laugh, referencing the protagonist from Dumb and Dumber. “He’s been cleared to practice, technically is there a chance he could be pulled from six-game? Yes, there is a chance. It is a possibility but it’s a 50-50 possibility.”
“I would say that somebody’s cleared to practice and you haven’t done anything in six weeks, it’s hard to throw you into the fire until you can prove it. He’s going to have a chance to prove it this week, but we are going to have one real practice. The timing, I don’t know if it’s the greatest, but we’re also talking about someone who has been playing football for a long time.”
Harris signed with the Green and White as a free agent in 2023 but was limited to five games due to suffering a tibial plateau fracture in his right leg. The break required surgery and ended his first season in Regina after completing 67 percent of his passes for 1,274 passing yards with six touchdowns and four interceptions.
Through parts of three games this year, the Waldo, Oh. native completed 72 percent of his passes for 872 passing yards with seven touchdowns and three picks. Over 12 CFL seasons with Toronto, Ottawa, Edmonton, Montreal, and Saskatchewan, Harris has thrown for 30,756 passing yards with 167 touchdowns and 78 interceptions.
Third-year CFL quarterback Shea Patterson has started five games in Harris’ place, producing a 2-3 win-loss record while completing 62 percent of his passes for 1,300 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions, plus 22 carries for 103 yards and four majors.
“The No. 1 thing I look at is do we have an opportunity to win? And he’s put us in those opportunities. I’ve been really pleased with Shea,” Mace said.
The Riders (5-3) travel to Ottawa for a matchup with the Redblacks (5-2) on Thursday. Kickoff goes at 7:30 p.m. eastern time. Based on his Instagram account, it seems as if it’s time for Harris to return.
