The Seattle Seahawks have released Canadian defensive back Jonathan Sutherland on the third day of training camp.
The 25-year-old was entering his second NFL season after signing a futures contract in January. He was waived to make room for veteran safety Marquise Blair.
Sutherland participated in training camp with the team last year before being waived with an injury designation. He returned to Seattle’s practice roster in October and finished the season on it when the club was eliminated from postseason contention with a 9-8 record.
The five-foot-eleven, 202-pound defender clocked a 4.58-second forty-yard dash at his pro day. He also leaped 37.5 inches in the vertical jump, 123 inches in the broad jump, ran a 4.13-second short shuttle, a 6.87-second three-cone drill, and put up 25 reps of 225 pounds on the bench.
The native of Ottawa, Ont. made 136 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, one interception, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery over 56 collegiate games at Penn State. He was a four-time team captain with the Nittany Lions.
Sutherland was selected in the first round of the 2023 CFL Draft by the Montreal Alouettes, who own his CFL rights in perpetuity.
