Shawn Bane Jr. was back at practice with the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Tuesday after he missed last week’s game against the Toronto Argonauts for personal reasons.

The five-foot-nine, 178-pound target recently revealed on social media that his sister, Charel ‘Pigg’ Carter, passed away at the age of 31 in the United States.

“Big sis, I’m sorry you were taken from us,” he wrote. “It will never make sense but God knows all and I won’t question him… the pain is so deep but know we will hold it down and be strong as you’d want us to be. Fly high, sis. I love you.”

Bane Jr. has caught 13 passes for 211 yards and three touchdowns over three games this season. He is coming off a breakout campaign in 2023, his first in Saskatchewan, during which he caught 93 passes for 1,104 yards and four touchdowns. He finished the year seventh in receiving yardage league-wide and third in yards after the catch.

The 29-year-old started his CFL career as a member of the Calgary Stampeders. He played 13 games over two seasons with the team, making 24 receptions for 388 yards and two touchdowns and returning 25 punts for 262 yards and 14 kickoffs for 294 yards.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders (4-0) will visit the B.C. Lions (4-1) on Saturday, July 13 at B.C. Place Stadium with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT.
