The Calgary Stampeders wanted to finalize a contract with former Saskatchewan Roughriders running back Jamal Morrow, but the veteran failed his physical.
“I wanted to see where he was at — he had wrist surgery,” head coach Dave Dickenson said. “I’m a fan of his and I’ll keep in touch with him.”
The five-foot-eight, 205-pound ball carrier played 16 games for the Riders last season while rushing for 907 yards and four touchdowns plus catching 36 passes for 349 yards and one score. He played 12 games the year in 2022, his first as a CFL starter, running for 666 yards with three touchdowns and catching 43 passes for 366 yards with one touchdown.
The 29-year-old Menifee, Calif. native became a free agent in February and was supposed to sign with the Stampeders, though he was still recovering from a wrist injury.
Morrow spent the 2019 season on Saskatchewan’s practice roster and filled a depth role in 2021. In total, he has rushed for 1,614 yards and seven touchdowns, caught 82 passes for 744 yards and two touchdowns, and returned 48 kickoffs for 1,031 yards.
The Stampeders were without starting running back Dedrick Mills in the team’s Week 5 loss to the Montreal Alouettes, while Peyton Logan and B.J. Emmons both suffered injuries during the contest.
The Calgary Stampeders (2-2) visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1-4) at Princess Auto Stadium on Friday, July 12 with kickoff slated for 8:30 p.m. EDT.
