The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have ruled out star running back James Butler for their Week 4 clash with the Ottawa Redblacks.

Butler suffered a head injury after being stood up at the goal line by defensive tackle Miles Brown late in his team’s loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders last Sunday. He has not practiced this week and will be unavailable.

The 29-year-old has carried the ball 30 times for 156 yards through the first three weeks of the 2024 season, adding nine receptions for 64 yards through the air. He rushed 235 times for 1,116 yards and seven touchdowns in his first season with the Ticats in 2023 while catching 61 passes for 527 yards and a receiving score.

Butler has gone over the 1,000-yard mark in each of the past two seasons but has yet to earn all-star honours. In 48 career games with the B.C. Lions and Ticats, he has carried 576 times for 2,829 yards and 16 touchdowns to go along with 162 catches for 1,218 yards and six receiving majors.

Rookie Greg Bell is expected to replace Butler in the backfield. The 25-year-old totalled 358 carries for 1,728 yards and 15 rushing touchdowns over two seasons at San Diego State University, adding 15 receptions for 119 yards and one receiving touchdown.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats (0-3) will visit the Ottawa Redblacks (1-1) on Sunday, June 30 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT.
