The Calgary Stampeders have released American quarterback Kyle Vantrease and American defensive lineman Toby Ndukwe.

Vantrease finished his collegiate career at Georgia Southern in 2022, earning third-team all-Sun Belt Conference honours after throwing for a school-record 4,253 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. He went unselected in the 2023 NFL Draft, later receiving tryouts with the Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The six-foot-two, 225-pound native of Akron, Ohio, spent his first five seasons at the University at Buffalo, suiting up for 35 games. As a member of the Bulls, he threw for 4,755 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions while briefly contributing as the team’s primary punter in 2019.

Vantrease saw limited action during the preseason with Calgary, completing eight-of-eleven pass attempts for 108 yards, before being placed on the team’s practice roster.

Ndukwe was named first-team All-Western Athletic Conference as a senior at Sam Houston State University in 2022 as he made 34 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, and one interception. He originally started his collegiate career at Southern Methodist University where he recorded 26 tackles, six tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and one fumble recovery.

The six-foot-one, 236-pound edge rusher attended training camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers last year and made five tackles, four tackles for loss, and one sack over three preseason games before being waived by the team.

The Calgary Stampeders (1-1) will host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (0-3) on Saturday, June 29 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT.
