The Ottawa Redblacks have signed veteran defensive back Tarvarus McFadden to their practice roster and released three others.

McFadden was released by the Toronto Argonauts amid final roster cuts earlier this month. He has suited up in 33 career games for the Double Blue, primarily at cornerback, and posted 65 defensive tackles, five special teams tackles, four interceptions, and two forced fumbles.

The 27-year-old played three seasons at Florida State University (2015-2017) making 53 tackles, three sacks and intercepting the ball eight times in 28 games. McFadden was an All-American in 2016, was a finalist for the NCAA’s top defensive player award and won the Jack Tatum Trophy for the nation’s top defensive back.

Among those released by the Redblacks were American defensive back Winston Rose, Canadian defensive tackle T.J. Rayam, and American quarterback Jake Dunniway.

Rose was signed on June 11 and last played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2023, losing his starting job at field-side cornerback during the team’s playoff run. The 30-year-old has played a total of 70 regular season CFL games with the Bombers, Lions, Redblacks, and Argos, making 214 defensive tackles, eight special teams tackles, 18 interceptions, and one forced fumble. He earned CFL all-star honours in 2019.

Rayam joined Ottawa a week earlier on June 4 but did not dress for their opener. He appeared in 21 career games with the Calgary Stampeders after they forfeited a second-round pick to take him in the 2022 supplemental draft, finishing with 20 tackles and three sacks.

Dunniway was in his second season with the Redblacks but dressed for his first game in the opener, never throwing a regular season pass in Ottawa. He threw for 5,575 yards, 36 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions over 33 games at Sacramento State University, earning third-team All-Big Sky honours in each of his last two years.

The Redblacks (1-0) will return to action on Thursday, June 20 when they visit the Montreal Alouettes (2-0) at 7:30 p.m. EDT.
