The Toronto Argonauts have signed American quarterback John Matocha.
The five-foot-eleven, 195-pound passer was a collegiate standout at the Colorado School of Mines where he went 50-7 as a starter, throwing for 15,006 yards, 162 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions. He also ran for 1,982 yards and 28 touchdowns.
The native of Magnolia, Texas ranks first all-time in NCAA Division II football in passing touchdowns, career quarterback rating, and most career games with a touchdown pass. He also ranks second in completion percentage and third in passing yards.
Matocha won the Harlon Hill Award in 2022, which is given annually to the NCAA Division II Player of the Year. He was also a runner-up for the award in 2023. He recently attended rookie minicamp with the Denver Broncos but wasn’t signed by the team.
The Argonauts will play their second and final preseason game on Friday, May 31 when they host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
