The Montreal Alouettes are expected to field a veteran-laden roster for Saturday’s preseason opener against the Toronto Argonauts, with the majority of their starting lineup expected to participate.

Defensively, the team will rest budding star defensive tackle Mustafa Johnson, as well as defensive backs Wesley Sutton and Najee Murray. On offence, the lone omission of note is receiver Reggie White Jr., who was expected to make his return after missing the entire 2023 season with injury.

The most important battle will come at the running back position, where Walter Fletcher enters his fourth CFL season as the heir apparent to William Stanback. The 27-year-old, who has 1,760 yards from scrimmage in his career, will get the start but is expected to be pushed by former Indiana back Stevie Scott III and Ohio State standout Mike Weber Jr. Veteran Canadians Jeshrun Antwi and Sean Thomas-Erlington will also be in the mix, along with sixth-round draft pick Mike Herzog.

Long-time NFL cornerback Cre’Von Leblanc will be among those filling in for the vacant spots on defence. The 29-year-old will draw in on the boundary side after playing 52 games south of the border, most notably with the Philadelphia Eagles. Defensive tackle T.D. Moultry, who finished last year on the practice roster, will also get an opportunity to roll with the top unit in place of Johnson.

The Alouettes are scheduled to host against the Argos on June 25 at 7:30 p.m. ET. The game is available for viewing free online via CFL+.
