Elks axe two quarterbacks, 11 others ahead of training camp

The Edmonton Elks have released 13 players ahead of the opening of training camp on Sunday, including American quarterbacks Kaleb Eleby and Obadiah Jones.

Eleby completed 63.4 percent of his passes for 6,084 yards, 45 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions over 24 collegiate games at Western Michigan University from 2018 to 2021 and was named second-team All-MAC in his final season. The 23-year-old was selected by the Houston Roughnecks in the 2023 XFL Draft and completed four-of-seven pass attempts for 28 yards with the team last year.

Jones threw for 3,963 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions over 40 collegiate games at Southern Arkansas University, a Division II program located in Magnolia, Ark. He also ran for 1,955 yards and 30 touchdowns along the ground and caught 21 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns.

There are six quarterbacks remaining on the team’s roster: McLeod Bethel-Thompson, Tre Ford, Jarret Doege, Malik Henry, Todd Centeio, and Woodrow Trey Lowe III.

Also released by Edmonton was Canadian receiver Hunter Brown, as well as a contingent of Americans that included running back Brian Herrien, receivers Charles Headen III and Tony Tate, offensive lineman Lyndell Hudson II, defensive linemen Azur Kamara and Trevon Mason, linebackers Markail Benton and Chris Whittaker, and defensive backs Jalen Green and Cail Jackson Jr.

The Elks will begin their preseason schedule on Saturday, May 25 when they host the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
