Edmonton Elks release former first-round pick Enock Makonzo, one other

The Edmonton Elks have released former first-round pick Enock Makonzo.

The five-foot-eleven, 195-pound native of Lachine, Que. was selected with the fourth overall pick in the 2022 CFL Draft out of Coastal Carolina University. He dressed for 16 games as a rookie and made 10 starts at strong-side linebacker, recording 57 total tackles and two sacks.

The 27-year-old played only five games this past season due to injury, recording 11 tackles and one forced fumble.

The Elks also released Canadian linebacker Jeremie Dominique, who was taken in the sixth round of the 2022 CFL Draft. He played 29 games over two seasons with the club and made 16 total tackles. The six-foot-one, 202-pound native of Montreal, Que. attended the University of Charleston in West Virginia.

The Elks will open their 2024 regular season by hosting the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday, June 8.
