The Chicago Bears have signed Canadian-American quarterback Brett Rypien.
The nephew of Calgary native and Super Bowl XXVI MVP Mark Rypien spent this past season with the Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks, and New York Jets, throwing for 172 yards and one interception and posting an 0-1 record as a starter.
The six-foot-two, 202-pound passer originally signed with the Denver Broncos after going unselected in the 2019 NFL Draft and spent four seasons with the team. He started three regular season games in Denver and threw for 778 yards, four touchdowns, and eight interceptions, going 2-1.
Rypien was born in Spokane, Wash. but is eligible for dual citizenship. He was a four-year starter at Boise State where he passed for 13,578 yards, 90 touchdowns, and 29 interceptions and was named three-time first-team all-Mountain West Conference and the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Year.
The Bears finished at the bottom of the NFC North in 2023 with a record of 7-10. Former first-round pick Justin Fields and Tyson Bagent, who was an undrafted rookie this past season, are the only two other quarterbacks currently on the roster, though Chicago is expected to draft Caleb Williams out of USC with the first overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.
