The Toronto Argonauts have signed a trio of Americans to their training camp roster, including defensive backs Kary Vincent Jr. and Darius Joiner, and running back Khalan Laborn.
Vincent Jr. was selected 237th overall in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos but was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in November of his rookie year. He appeared in two games, recording two tackles, and was waived following training camp the following year, later spending time on the San Francisco 49ers practice roster. The 26-year-old signed with the San Antonio Brahmas of the XFL in 2023 and was later traded to the Houston Roughnecks, recording five tackles in six games.
The five-foot-10, 190-pound cornerback played three seasons at Louisiana State University, where he also ran track and competed in the 4×100 relay at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field National Championship. On the gridiron, he recorded 87 tackles, one sack, and six interceptions in 39 games for the Tigers. After winning a CFP National Championship with LSU in 2019, Vincent opted out of the 2020 season in order to prepare for the NFL Draft.
Joiner had a circuitous collegiate career which culminated at Duke University in 2022, where he was named third-team All-ACC after collecting 97 tackles, eight tackles for loss, four sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery in 13 games. He began his career with a four-year stint at Jacksonville State before spending the 2021 season at Western Illinois University, earning first-team FCS All-American honours and finishing sixth in voting for the Buck Buchanan Defensive Player of the Year award.
In 53 career collegiate games, the six-foot-two, 200-pound safety amassed 320 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, four interceptions, three forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. After going unselected in the 2023 NFL Draft, the 25-year-old signed with the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent but did not make the roster.
Laborn had his rights acquired by the Argos as part of the trade that sent Canadian receiver Kurleigh Gittens Jr. to Edmonton in exchange for defensive tackle Jake Ceresna. The 26-year-old previously attended training camp with the San Francisco 49ers before spending a month on the Elks practice roster.
The five-foot-nine, 204-pound ball-carrier played at Marshall University in 2022 where he carried the ball 302 times for 1,513 yards and 16 touchdowns over 13 games with the Thundering Herd and was named first-team All-Sun Belt. Originally a five-star recruit coming out of high school, he committed to Florida State where he ran for 297 yards and four touchdowns in 12 games. He missed most of the 2018 season due to a knee injury and was dismissed by the team in July 2020 for violating team rules.
Toronto will open their 2024 regular season on Sunday, June 9 when they host the B.C. Lions at BMO Field.
