The Saskatchewan Roughriders have officially signed American defensive end Malik Carney. The news was first reported by 3DownNation’s J.C. Abbott on February 8.

The 28-year-old dressed for 17 games with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2023, recording a career-high 52 defensive tackles. He added five sacks, an interception, and a forced fumble while starting every game he played.

The six-foot-three, 245-pound pass rusher has played in 41 games over three seasons with Hamilton, registering 86 total tackles, 13 quarterback sacks, one interception and two forced fumbles.

Collegiately, Carney spent four seasons at the University of North Carolina, playing in 36 games for the Tar Heels. He registered 176 total tackles, 32.5 tackles for loss, 17 quarterback sacks, four pass knockdowns, five forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries — returning one for a touchdown.

Prior to signing in the CFL, Carney spent time with the Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks, and Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent.

Saskatchewan begins the 2024 season on Saturday, June 8 when the Riders travel to Edmonton to take on the Elks.
