The B.C. Lions have released American defensive back Quincy Mauger and running back Vance McShane ahead of the opening of free agency.

The team also confirmed the release of veteran American defensive tackle Woody Baron, which was first reported by 3DownNation‘s Justin Dunk.

Mauger appeared in all 18 games for the Lions in 2023, making 15 starts at safety and another two at strong-side linebacker. However, he was reduced to a rotational role for the playoffs.

The 28-year-old first joined the Lions ahead of the 2022 season, appearing in eight games as a rookie. In 24 career games, he has made 66 defensive tackles and nine more on special teams, adding four sacks, two interceptions and a forced fumble.

Prior to his time in the CFL, Mauger played four years at the University of Georgia from 2013 to 2016, suiting up in 50 games and recording 186 combined tackles, seven interceptions, 12 pass knockdowns and a forced fumble. He later spent time with the Atlanta Falcons and Oakland Raiders, as well as  the Atlanta Legends of the Alliance of American Football and the Blues of The Spring League.

McShane finished the year on the Lions’ practice roster and never saw game action. He carried the ball 189 times for 1,042 yards and eight touchdowns over his final two collegiate seasons at Northern Iowa, while making 11 receptions for 99 yards and one score over 20 games.

The Lions will open their 2024 regular season on Sunday, June 9 when they visit the Toronto Argonauts at BMO Field.
