The Calgary Stampeders have signed American defensive back Carlins Platel to their training camp roster.

The six-foot-one, 194-pound defender spent his final college season at the University of South Carolina, playing in 12 games as a slot cornerback. He recorded 21 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack, two forced fumbles and two pass breakups with the Gamecocks.

The native of Brooklyn, N.Y. began his collegiate career at the Division II level, spending three seasons at Assumption College. He collected 96 total tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries in 33 games while breaking up 37 passes and notching seven interceptions, including one for a touchdown. He was a first-team Northeast-10 Conference all-star in 2019.

After going unselected in the 2022 NFL Draft, Platel attended training camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022 and later signed with the USFL’s Philadelphia Stars in 2023, but saw action with neither team.

The Stampeders will open their 2024 season on Friday, June 7 when they host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
