The Ottawa Redblacks have signed running back Devonte Williams to a two-year extension that will keep him in the nation’s capital through 2025.
The 26-year-old was scheduled to hit free agency on February 13. In 15 games last season, he carried 182 times for 1,002 yards and three touchdowns — his first thousand-yard campaign — while adding 37 catches for 327 yards.
“I can’t wait to be back in Ottawa. I’m glad my free agency process is over because there is no other place I’d rather be,” Williams said in a statement. “I love the culture we are creating here, I love the fan base, and it’s time we put a season together that we all deserve and bring the Grey Cup back home!”
Williams broke into the CFL in 2022 with the Redblacks, posting 90 carries for 454 yards and 27 receptions for 159 yards in eight games.
The native of Columbia, Md. split his college career between Indiana and Southeastern Louisiana, rushing 136 times for 599 yards and eight touchdowns while catching 68 passes for 571 yards and three majors in 12 games as a senior with the Lions in 2019. He also added a punt return touchdown.
The Redblacks will begin their 2024 season when they host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Thursday, June 13 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
