The Ottawa Redblacks have signed American linebacker Gary Johnson Jr. to a one-year contract extension, tying him to the team through 2024. He was slated to become a free agent next month.

The six-foot, 230-pound defender played 11 games with the Redblacks this past season, recording eight special teams tackles and one forced fumble.

The 27-year-old worked out for the Jacksonville Jaguars and New England Patriots this off-season but wasn’t offered a contract by either team.

The native of Douglas, Ala. spent the first three seasons of his CFL career with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, joining the team in 2019. He played in 14 games for the franchise, posting nine defensive tackles, one sack, and 16 special teams tackles.

CFL free agency is set to get underway on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at noon EST.
