The Edmonton Elks have added to their quarterback room, signing record-setting University of Colorado signal-caller Steven Montez on Thursday.
The six-foot-five, 230-pound passer played 46 career games with the Buffaloes from 2016 to 2019, breaking or tying 50 records over 36 consecutive starts. He is Colorado’s all-time leading passer, completing 824-of-1,321 pass attempts for 9,710 yards, 63 touchdowns and 33 interceptions while also rushing for 960 yards and 11 majors. He was an honourable mention All-Pac 12 selection in 2017.
Despite attending the prestigious Senior Bowl all-star game, Montez went unselected in the 2020 NFL Draft. He spent time with the Washington Commanders and Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent, before joining the XFL’s Seattle Sea Dragons last season and completing a single pass.
Also joining the Elks next season will be defensive lineman Trevon Mason.
The six-foot-five, 290-pound defender spent three seasons at the University of Arizona, earning honourable mention All-Pac 12 status as a senior in 2021. In 28 games for the Wildcats, he registered 106 total tackles, 15 tackles-for-loss, 3.5 sacks and seven pass knockdowns.
Mason attended New York Jets’ rookie camp after going unselected in the 2022 NFL Draft and had a brief stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He most recently played for the XFL’s Houston Roughnecks, recording 16 total tackles, 2.5 sacks and one interception in 10 games last season.
The Elks will open the team’s 75th anniversary season on Saturday, June 8 by hosting the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
