Longtime CFL coach Jeff Reinebold has accepted a position at the University of Hawaii, according to the Star Advisor, and will reportedly coach the interior of the team’s defensive line. A spokesperson from the Tiger-Cats declined to comment on the report.
The 66-year-old from South Bend, Ind. spent this past season as the special teams coordinator and assistant defensive backs coach with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, his third stint with the team.
Reinebold’s first coaching job in the CFL came with the B.C. Lions in 1991 as their special teams coordinator and receivers coach. He spent three seasons with the team before moving on to the Las Vegas Posse and Edmonton Football Team prior to a second stint with B.C. in 1996 as their assistant head coach and defensive coordinator.
The Maine product became the head coach and general manager of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1997 and held the positions for two seasons, posting a record of 7-29. He spent the next 11 years coaching in NFL Europe and in the NCAA, including a two-year stint as the defensive line coach at the University of Hawaii.
Reinebold returned to the CFL in 2012 as the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach with the Montreal Alouettes. He has been in the league ever since with the exception of 2022 when he became Hawaii’s director of player development. Though he was slated to serve as Montreal’s special teams coordinator that year, he didn’t join the team due to what the Als termed “personal matters.”
The University of Hawaii has several CFL connections. Head coach Timmy Chang, a native of Honolulu who was once a star quarterback for the Rainbow Warriors, played two seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Dennis Thurman, who was reportedly hired alongside Reinebold, served as Hamilton’s offensive coordinator in 2017.
