The Toronto Argonauts have signed American running back Deandre Torrey.
The 25-year-old most recently played for the Vegas Vipers of the XFL, recording 19 carries for 49 yards and one touchdown along with five receptions for 35 yards.
The five-foot-seven, 200-pound ball-carrier attended rookie minicamp with the New York Jets after going unselected in the 2022 NFL Draft but wasn’t offered a contract. He later signed with the Philadelphia Eagles but was released near the start of training camp.
The native of Gauthier, Miss. ran for 3,228 yards and 36 touchdowns over 44 games with the University of North Texas Mean Green and caught 57 passes for 436 yards and four touchdowns. He was named second-team All-CUSA as a senior and honourable mention as a junior.
The Argos have yet to re-sign star running back A.J. Ouellette, which could leave a gaping hole in their backfield. General manager Mike ‘Pinball’ Clemons recently updated the status of contract negotiations between the team and their star ball carrier.
