The Ottawa Redblacks have extended American defensive tackle Michael Wakefield through the 2024 season.

The newly 29-year-old had a career year in 2023, notching 35 defensive tackles and six sacks in 18 games. He was previously slated to become a free agent on February 13.

“R Nation, mark this day; this year going to be special,” Wakefield said in a statement. “I’m signing this contract on my birthday and I’m super excited to be back. There’s a lot of unfinished business and a lot of fish to be caught.”

Wakefield first signed with the Redblacks in 2017 and spent three seasons with the team, before moving on to the Montreal Alouettes for two seasons. He returned to the nation’s capital in 2023. Through 84 career games, the six-foot-three, 268-pound pass rusher has racked up 134 total tackles, 20 sacks, and an interception.

The Redblacks will begin their 2024 season when they host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Thursday, June 13 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
