The Toronto Argonauts have signed former NFL receiver J. J. Arcega-Whiteside.
The six-foot-two, 225-pound target was a second-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent three seasons with the team, making 16 catches for 290 yards and one touchdown over 40 career games. He started seven games with the club and was on the field for 797 offensive snaps along with 249 snaps on special teams.
The native of Utebo, Spain was traded to the Seattle Seahawks ahead of the 2022 season in exchange for defensive back Ugo Amadi. He was released by the team following a three-month stint on the practice roster and signed with the Atlanta Falcons in May 2023. He was cut by the Falcons at the conclusion of training camp.
The 27-year-old ran a 4.50-second forty-yard dash following his career at Stanford University. He also leaped 34 inches in the vertical jump and completed the three-cone drill in 7.23 seconds.
Arcega-Whiteside caught 135 passes for 2,219 yards and 28 touchdowns over 33 collegiate games with the Cardinal. He was named second-team All-Pac 12 as a senior in 2018.
The Argos have also signed American defensive backs Marquis Waters and Latavious Brini.
Waters was in training camp with the New York Jets in 2023 after going unselected out of Texas Tech but was released upon its conclusion. The six-foot-one, 215-pound defender played 17 games with the Red Raiders and made 69 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, one sack, and two interceptions and was named an honourable mention All-Big 12 in his senior season. He previously played at Duke University.
Brini signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent in 2023 but was released at the end of training camp. The six-foot-two, 215-pound cover man recorded 55 tackles, four tackles for loss, one interception, and one forced fumble at the University of Arkansas in 2022. He previously played at the University of Georgia where he won a National Championship in 2018.
