The Ottawa Redblacks have signed defensive back Ty Cranston to a one-year contract extension through 2024. He was set to become a free agent in February.
The 29-year-old dressed for all 18 regular season games with the Redblacks in 2023 and made one defensive tackle, 14 special teams tackles, and one interception. He played almost exclusively on special teams while filling a depth role on defence behind Justin Howell and Alonzo Addae.
The six-foot-three, 210-pound defender was a seventh-round pick in the 2017 CFL Draft out of the University of Ottawa by the Montreal Alouettes. He returned to the Gee-Gees for his final year of U Sports in eligibility before returning to the Alouettes in 2018, dressing for five games.
Cranston spent three seasons with the Alouettes before signing with Ottawa as a free agent in 2022. He recorded a career-high 17 special teams tackles that same year.
The Winnipeg native has recorded 42 defensive tackles, 55 special teams tackles, and two interceptions over 70 career CFL games as a member of the Alouettes and Redblacks.
CFL free agency gets underway at noon EST on Tuesday, Feb. 13.
