The Saskatchewan Roughriders have announced their football operations staff for the 2024 season, bringing a legendary member of the Green and White back into the fold.

Long-time Riders receiver Dan Farthing has been hired as the club’s new head of strength and conditioning. The 54-year-old is a certified strength and conditioning specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and a qualified exercise physiologist who has previously consulted for Canadian Sport Centre Saskatchewan and the Sport Medicine and Science Council of Saskatchewan. He received the President’s Medal as the outstanding graduate from the College of Kinesiology at the University of Saskatchewan in the fall of 2002 and has since gone on to secure multiple post-graduate degrees from the University of Regina.

Originally selected with the second overall pick in the first round of the 1991 CFL Draft out of the University of Saskatchewan, Farthing went on to play 11 seasons with the Riders. He retired in 2001 with 169 games played, sitting fourth all-time in franchise history with 384 receptions and eighth all-time in receiving yards with 5,097 while also adding 19 touchdowns and 34 special teams tackles. The native of Saskatoon was inducted into the Riders’ Plaza of Honour in 2009.

In addition to the hiring of Farthing, assistant general managers Paul Jones and Kyle Carson were both signed to two-year extensions. Jordan Greenly will also be back as director of football operations.

Jones is entering his sixth season with Saskatchewan after joining the club in 2019. The Alabama resident previously spent 21 years as part of the Edmonton Elks’ organization, but initially came into the CFL as part of the Blue Bombers in 1988. The five-time Grey Cup champion also had stints with the Toronto Argonauts and NFL’s Minnesota Vikings.

Carson first joined the Roughriders in 2019 as director of player personnel and was promoted to assistant GM in 2022. He works closely with general manager Jeremy O’Day and Jones to oversee the club’s scouting staff and coordinates the team’s CFL Draft preparation, among other responsibilities. Prior to arriving in Saskatchewan, he won two Grey Cups in eight seasons with the Calgary Stampeders.

Greenly enters his seventh season with the Riders, having served as manager of football operations in 2022 and football operations coordinator from 2018 to 2021. He is responsible for the preparation and registration of player contracts as well as football operations logistics, including team and staff travel and accommodations, the organization of training camp, and the onboarding and outboarding process for players and staff.

Head athletic therapist Greg Mayer, manager of equipment Gordon Gilroy, manager of video and analytics Nick Bowley and their staff will all be returning from the 2023 season.

The Riders open the 2024 campaign on Saturday, June 8 at 7:00 p.m. ET when they visit the Edmonton Elks.
