Long-time Saskatchewan Roughriders broadcaster John Lynch has passed away at the age of 86.
Nicknamed ‘Frenzy,’ Lynch first began covering the Riders in 1969 with CJME as a halftime host and weekly contributor, going on to have a 45-year career in radio and television. He would later serve as one of the voices of Rider games on CKCK and CKRM, handling both colour commentating and play-by-play duties at various points.
In 1987, Lynch began appearing on television with Access Now Sports’ In The Huddle, now a Saskatchewan institution. He was a regular radio contributor in Regina until his retirement in 2014 and continued to make sporadic appearances on The Rod Pedersen Show until 2021.
The Riders issued the following statement regarding Lynch’s passing on Friday evening.
“The Saskatchewan Roughriders are saddened to hear about the passing of long-time media member and former Roughrider colour analyst John Lynch.
Many Roughrider fans grew up with Lynch’s instantly recognizable voice on radio and television, offering smart analysis and a strong point of view. But beyond his professional capacity covering the team, John loved the Roughriders and shared that love with those around him.
On behalf of Rider Nation, we send our condolences to his Family, including his
wife Margie, and his friends and loved ones.”
Lynch was a member of the Roughrider Plaza of Honour selection committee and a voter for the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Rural Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.
