The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed a trio of American defensive backs, including Rodney Clemons, Cole Coleman, and Mark Fields II.
Clemons dressed for three games this past season in Saskatchewan, recording one special teams tackle. He missed six games due to injury and spent a portion of the season on the practice roster.
The native of Katy, Texas signed with the Kansas City Chiefs after going unselected in the 2020 NFL Draft. He spent a portion of his rookie season on the practice squad before joining the Tennessee Titans in 2021 and spending time as a member of their practice squad.
Clemons played five collegiate seasons at Southern Methodist University from 2015 to 2019 and recorded 275 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, seven interceptions, 34 pass knockdowns, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and two blocked kicks over 54 games. He was named second-team All-ACC as a senior.
The six-foot, 205-pound cover man participated in the 2020 NFL Combine where he recorded a 4.71-second forty-yard dash, 33.5-inch vertical jump, 118-inch broad jump, and 21 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press.
Coleman went unselected in the 2023 NFL Draft but signed with the Indianapolis Colts shortly thereafter, attending rookie minicamp with the team before being waived.
The five-foot-ten, 193-pound defender played five collegiate seasons at Elon University and made 281 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, one sack, three interceptions, nine pass deflections, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and one blocked kick over 42 games. He ran a 4.43-second forty-yard dash at his pro day.
Fields II signed with the team in October, though he didn’t dress for any regular season games.
The five-foot-ten, 181-pound cover man initially signed with the Kansas City Chiefs after going unselected in the 2019 NFL Draft. He was traded to the Minnesota Vikings after training camp and played in one regular season game as a rookie, recording no statistics.
The native of Cornelius, N.C. dressed for two games with the Vikings in 2020 and made total tackles prior to being waived. He was claimed by the Houston Texans and played two games with the club, recording two total tackles. He was waived by the team the following off-season. Fields II was claimed by the San Francisco 49ers but was released by the team during training camp in 2021. He also had a stint in the USFL.
The 27-year-old played four collegiate seasons at Clemson University and made 45 tackles, five tackles for loss, one sack, 12 pass knockdowns, and one interception over 46 games. He helped the Tigers win the College Football Playoff National Championship in 2016 and 2018.
