University of Saskatchewan linebacker Nick Wiebe suffered a major injury during the 2023 Hardy Cup playoffs.

The first-team All-Canadian tore the ACL ligament in his knee during a 40-17 loss against the University of Alberta at Foote Field on Saturday, November 4. He’s the best Canadian university linebacker eligible to be selected in the 2024 CFL Draft. The medical team working with him believes a mid-season return could be possible.

The Calgary native led the Canada West conference in tackles with 60.5 total (47 solo, 27 assisted) along with 1.5 tackles for loss, one sack and one forced fumble this past season. Through 31 games with the Huskies, Wiebe has recorded 162 total tackles (124 solo, 77 assisted) plus six tackles for loss, five sacks, three forced fumbles and one pass breakup.

Wiebe transferred to Saskatchewan from the University of Oregon. He spent three seasons with the Ducks dressing in 2018 and 2020 with a redshirt year in between, playing four games making eight total tackles, five solo and three assisted. His best game came in the 2021 Fiesta Bowl against No. 10 ranked Iowa State University, notching six total tackles, four solo and two assisted.

The six-foot-one, 240-pound defender played two years for IMG Academy in Florida, including an undefeated regular season campaign in 2017 when he made 29 tackles and two tackles for loss.

Wiebe has been a captain with the Huskies football team since arriving on campus and helped Saskatchewan win back-to-back Hardy Cup trophies in 2021 and 2022. He’s an outstanding prospect who could make an immediate impact at the pro level once rehab is complete.
