Toronto Argonauts’ defensive back Qwan’tez Stiggers has been named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Rookie for the 2023 CFL season, winning the vote by a margin of 58 to three over Edmonton Elks’ defensive back Kai Gray.

The 21-year-old from Atlanta, Ga. started 15 games at cornerback in his first CFL season, earning East Division all-star status. He collected 53 defensive tackles, three special teams tackles, and five interceptions in 16 appearances. He is the first defensive back to win this award since 1998.

Stiggers did not play college football prior to arriving in Canada due to academic issues while attending B.E.S.T. Academy High School in Atlanta. He began his professional career in the Fan Controlled Football League in 2022, where he made 30 tackles and five interceptions en route to becoming a finalist for the league’s Defensive Player of the Year award.

Due to his unique background, Stiggers will need to declare for the NFL Draft before exploring any future opportunities south of the border. He remains under contract with the Argonauts through 2024.

Voting was conducted by 61 national members of the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC).
