Laval Rouge et Or receiver Édouard Arsenault has been named the U Sports offensive player of the week after he helped his team advance to the Dunsmore Cup for the twentieth consecutive season.
The third-year receiver from Montreal made the game-winning touchdown catch in double overtime to help Laval secure a 34-27 win over Concordia in the RSEQ semi-final. He finished the game with six catches for 143 yards and two touchdowns all courtesy of quarterback Arnaud Desjardins.
The other nominees for the award were St. FX quarterback Silas Fagnan (AUS), Western receiver Savaughn Magnaye-Jones (OUA), and Alberta receiver Carter Kettyle (CW).
Bishop’s defensive back Mathieu Déry was named the U Sports defensive player of the week after recording three tackles and one pick-six in his team’s 34-15 AUS semi-final win over the Mount Allison Mounties. The first-year defender from Lac-Beauport, Que. helped his team advance to the Loney Bowl this weekend where they’ll take on the undefeated St. FX X-Men.
The other nominees for the award were Montreal defensive back Bruno Lagacé (RSEQ), Wilfrid Laurier defensive lineman Brandon Omonuwa (OUA), and UBC defensive lineman Mitchell Townsend (CW).
Western Mustangs’ kick returner Daniel Kubongo was named the U Sports special teams player of the week after he returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown. The first-year player from Calgary helped his club earn a berth in the Yates Cup for the eighth straight season.
The other nominees for the award were St. FX return specialist Ben Harrington (AUS), Montreal kicker Philippe Boyer (RSEQ), and Alberta kicker Jonathan Giustini (CW).
