The Ottawa Redblacks have fired assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Khari Jones.
“On behalf of the Ottawa Redblacks, I’d like to thank Khari Jones for his contributions to our organization and his professionalism over the last year,” said head coach Bob Dyce in a statement. “Coach Jones gives everything he has to his role as a coach in the CFL, and we wish him all the best in the next chapter of his career.”
The Redblacks finished the 2023 season with a 4-14 record after suffering injuries at the quarterback position to Tyrie Adams and Jeremiah Masoli. The team finished sixth league-wide in offensive points per game (20.7), tied for seventh in offensive touchdowns (33), ninth in net offence per game (318.8), ninth in quarterback rating (82.1), tied for eighth in turnovers (47), and ninth in sacks allowed (71).
Jones was hired by the team last off-season to as the offensive play-caller for 2023. He and Dyce had previously worked together with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2012 and 2013. During one of those years, Dyce was the offensive coordinator and Jones was the team’s quarterbacks coach.
Jones most recently served as a football operations consultant with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2022 and joined the team midseason after he was fired as the head coach of the Montreal Alouettes following a 1-3 start to the season.
Prior to joining the Alouettes as the team’s offensive coordinator in 2018, Jones served as an assistant coach with Hamilton, Saskatchewan, and B.C. after starting his coaching career in 2009. He won his first and only Grey Cup with the Riders on home soil in 2013.
The 52-year-old from Hammond, Ind. played quarterback in the CFL for 11 seasons, primarily as a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He was named the league’s Most Oustanding Player and a CFL all-star in 2001 en route to a Grey Cup appearance, while also earning West Division all-star honours in 2002.
