Concordia Stingers’ QB Olivier Roy named U Sports offensive player of the week

Concordia Stingers’ quarterback Olivier Roy has been named the offensive player of the week.

The fourth-year passer from Donnacona, Que. completed 22-of-33 pass attempts for 328 yards and five touchdowns in the team’s 40-23 win over the McGill Redbirds this past weekend. The performance helped the Stingers clinch third-place in the RSEQ, which means they will visit the Laval Rouge et Or in the first round of the conference playoffs.

The other nominees for the award were Bishop’s receiver Olivier Burnett (AUS), Carleton quarterback Tristan Lefebvre (OUA), and UBC quarterback Garrett Rooker (CW).

Concordia Stingers’ linebacker Zach Philion was named the defensive player of the week after making 5.5 tackles, three tackles for loss, and one sack against the Redbirds. The fourth-year linebacker from Buffalo, N.Y. now ranks sixth on his team with 19.5 total tackles this season.

The other nominees for the award were Acadia linebacker Graham Nightingale (AUS), Waterloo defensive lineman Tyson Hergott (OUA), and Alberta defensive lineman Kwadwo Boahen (CW).

Alberta Golden Bears’ kicker Jonathan Giustini was named the special teams player of the week after he made four-of-five field goal attempts with a long of 47 yards as well as three one-point converts. The fourth-year from Calgary, who is also Alberta’s starting safety, is now the Golden Bears’ all-time leader with 260 career points.

The other nominees for the award were Bishop’s kicker Xavier Gervais (AUS), Laval kicker Vincent Blanchard (RSEQ), and Western return specialist Daniel Kubongo (OUA).
