Calgary Dinos’ linebacker Daniel Flanagan headlines U Sports players of the week

Calgary Dinos’ linebacker Daniel Flanagan has been named the U Sports defensive player of the week.

The third-year defender made eight tackles and two sacks to help his team get its first win of the season in a 20-6 upset victory over the UBC Thunderbirds. UBC came into this past weekend’s game averaging 53.5 points per game but were held scoreless until the final two minutes of the fourth quarter.

The other candidates for the recognition were Acadia defensive lineman Nick King (AUS), Montreal linebacker Nicky Farinaccio (RSEQ), and Queen’s defensive lineman Silas Hubert (OUA).

Montreal Carabins’ quarterback Jonathan Sénécal was named the offensive player of the week as he completed 24-of-29 pass attempts for 252 yards and one touchdown in the team’s 28-0 victory over the Laval Rouge et Or. He also ran the ball six times for 61 yards and one touchdown.

The other nominees for the recognition were St. FX quarterback Silas Fagnan (AUS), Wilfrid Laurier quarterback Taylor Elgersma (OUA), and Manitoba quarterback Jackson Tachinski (CW).

Carleton Ravens’ kicker Brandon Forcier was named the special teams player of the week after he made three-of-five field goal attempts and three one-point converts. He helped his team complete a 20-point comeback to beat the Waterloo Warriors 31-30, hitting a 47-yard field goal to tie the game with 47 seconds left and a last-second rouge for the win.

The other nominees for the recognition were St. FX kicker Ben Hadley (AUS), Concordia linebacker William Castonguay (RSEQ), and Regina receiver Kenton Appel (CW).
