The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks have reached the top half of the U Sports football rankings after defeating the Ottawa Gee-Gees this past weekend.

The Golden Hawks beat the Gee-Gees at TD Place Stadium by a score of 38-30 as Hec Crighton Trophy hopeful Taylor Elgersma threw for 257 yards, one touchdown, one interception and carried the ball seven times for 36 yards and two touchdowns. Quentin Scott dominated along the ground with 15 rushing attempts for 194 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown.

The victory improved Wilfrid Laurier’s record to 6-0, pulling them into a tie with the Western Mustangs for first place in the OUA standings. The two teams are scheduled to meet on Saturday, Oct. 21 at Western Alumni Stadium in London, Ont. in what will be the final regular season game of the year for both clubs.

The top three teams in the rankings remained the same, as did the St. FX X-Men at No. 5. The Saskatchewan Huskies fell from No. 4 to No. 6 to take Wilfrid Laurier’s previous spot, while the bottom four teams in the rankings remained unchanged as well.

U Sports is returning to a full slate of games this upcoming week after the Mustangs, Guelph Gryphons, Windsor Lancers, Sherbrooke Vert et Or, Mount Allison Mounties, and the entire Canada West conference were on a bye this past week.
