Wilfrid Laurier quarterback Taylor Elgersma has been named the U Sports offensive player of the week after shredding Guelph’s secondary in a 61-20 victory this past weekend.
The six-foot-six, 220-pound passer from London, Ont. completed 31-of-36 pass attempts for 451 yards and six touchdowns, tying a single-game program record. He also scored a seventh touchdown as he ran one in with nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Elgersma is averaging 311.7 passing yards per game this season, which ranks fourth in the country. The Golden Hawks are off to a 3-0 start this season as they’re set to host the Waterloo Warriors (1-2) on Saturday, Sept. 16.
The other nominees for the recognition were St. FX running back Malcolm Bussey (AUS), Concordia running back Franck Tchembe (RSEQ), and Saskatchewan quarterback Anton Amundrud (CW).
Acadia defensive lineman Kyle Chappus was named the defensive player of the week after recording 6.5 tackles, four tackles for loss, and three sacks in the team’s 13-5 loss to the Saint Mary’s Huskies. The Axemen allowed only six offensive points in the game with SMU’s only touchdown coming on special teams.
The other nominees for the award were Concordia linebacker Gabriel Tremblay (RSEQ), Queen’s defensive lineman Van Wishart (OUA), and UBC linebacker Ryan Baker (CW).
St. FX kicker Ben Hadley was named the special teams player of the week after he made six field goals in the team’s 43-8 win over Mount Allison, setting a new school record. He also scored a touchdown after running the ball in 14 yards for the score after a botched snap, accounting for 29 points on the day. He also averaged 65.2 yards on five kickoffs.
The other nominees for the recognition were Laval return specialist Olivier Cool (RSEQ), Windsor return specialist Javonni Cunningham (OUA), and Alberta defensive back Jonathan Giustini (CW).
