The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have brought back Canadian defensive back Zach Herzog and released rookie quarterback Mike Glass III.
The five-foot-nine, 192-pound defender was originally a seventh-round selection of the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the 2022 CFL Draft out of Hillsdale College. He was in training camp with the team but was released following its conclusion and entered the U Sports ranks where he played 11 games with the UBC Thunderbirds, recording 49 total tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss, four knockdowns, and one interception.
Herzog was in training camp with the Ticats in January but was released by the team in May. He has yet to dress for a CFL game in his career.
The native of Windsor, Ont. played 30 games over five seasons with the Chargers in NCAA Division II (2017-21), registering 244 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, one quarterback sack, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and three interceptions. He was named first-team All-Great Midwest Athletic Conference in 2019.
Glass signed with Hamilton last month after participating in training camp with the Montreal Alouettes. He dressed for both preseason games in La Belle Province, completing five-of-seven passes for 47 yards. He lost out to Caleb Evans and Davis Alexander in the race to back-up Cody Fajardo.
The six-foot, 209-pound passer was a standout at Eastern Michigan University, throwing for 4,193 yards, 33 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions over two seasons with the Eagles (2018-19). He also carried the ball 189 times for 840 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Prior to arriving in the CFL, Glass was a backup with the Massachusetts Pirates of the Indoor Football League. He made his first career start in April 2022 and threw for 146 yards and four touchdowns in a 36-22 win over the Iowa Barnstormers.
Glass was moved to the practice roster for Hamilton’s win over Ottawa this past week as Matthew Shiltz returned to the active roster.
The Ticats (5-7) are scheduled to host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (10-3) on Saturday, Sept. 16 with kickoff slated for 4:00 p.m. EDT.
