Alberta Golden Bears’ QB Eli Hetlinger headlines U Sports players of the week

Alberta Golden Bears’ quarterback Eli Hetlinger has been named the U Sports offensive player of the week following this past weekend’s action across the country.

The second-year passer from Edmonton completed 21-of-31 pass attempts for 380 yards and two touchdowns in a 33-9 win over the Calgary Dinos. Both of his touchdown passes were thrown to Carter Kettyle, going for 70 and 71 yards apiece. The six-foot, 190-pound passer participated with the Edmonton Elks in training camp this year as part of the CFL’s quarterback internship program.

The other nominees for the recognition were St. FX running back Malcolm Bussey (AUS), Montreal quarterback Jonathan Sénécal (RSEQ), and Western receiver Mohsen Jamal (OUA).

Montreal Carabins’ linebacker Nicky Farinaccio was named the defensive player of the week after making nine tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, and one forced fumble in the team’s 43-12 win over the Concordia Stingers. The defending Presidents’ Trophy winner is currently in his third season of U Sports eligibility.

The other nominees for the award were Bishop’s linebacker Gabriel Royer (AUS), Wilfrid Laurier linebacker Ethan Gregorcic (OUA), and Manitoba defensive back Sebastien Reid.

UBC Thunderbirds’ kicker Kieran Flannery-Fleck was named the special teams player of the week after going six-for-six on field goals with a long of 38 yards. The Ottawa native helped his team defeat the Regina Rams by a score of 25-10 and also averaged 38 yards on six punts.

The other nominees for the award were St. FX return specialist Ben Harrington (St. FX), McGill return specialist Brandon Ciccarello (RSEQ), and York return specialist Alfred Olay (OUA).
