The Windsor Lancers have taken a spot in the U Sports football rankings after starting the year off with a 2-0 record.

The Lancers defeated the Guelph Gryphons by a score of 41-18 this past week after leading 33-4 at the start of the fourth quarter. Danny Skelton threw two touchdown passes, while Weabge Mombo and Joey Zorn both rushed for over 100 yards. Kolade Amusan was the standout on defence as he recorded three sacks.

Windsor hasn’t finished the season with a winning record since 2014 and have done so only three times since the turn of the century. The team has won only two playoffs games over that span of time, winning in the OUA quarterfinal round in 2003 and 2011.

The Lancer will look to stay perfect this weekend when they visit the Waterloo Warriors (1-1) on Saturday, Sept. 9. Active CFL players who attended Windsor include Ottawa Redblacks’ offensive lineman Drew Desjarlais and Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ receiver Chris Osei-Kusi.

The Manitoba Bisons fell off the rankings after squandering an 18-point lead at home against the Saskatchewan Huskies to lose 30-27. Jackson Tachinski threw for 208 yards and three touchdowns for the Bisons and also led the team along the ground, rushing 10 times for 89 yards.
