CFL podcaster & Riders fan picks up Blue Bombers stars in Uber

Anything can happen on Labour Day Weekend, as one CFL podcaster found out on Saturday night.

Stephen Safinuk, better known to CFL fans by his Twitter handle Safimod, was driving an Uber in Regina when he accepted a ride request from some familiar faces.

In an only-in-the-CFL moment, Blue Bombers’ receivers Rasheed Bailey, Kenny Lawler, Brendan O’Leary-Orange, and Nic Demski, as well as defensive end Willie Jefferson all piled into the van. The crew from Winnipeg were hitching a ride back from The Keg to the team hotel and were greeted by Safinuk in his Riders jersey, less than 24 hours before those two teams were set to clash on the field.

A blogger and co-host of the popular Piffles Podcast since 2016, Safinuk certainly wasn’t intimidated by the rivals in his vehicle and told 3DownNation that the trip was filled with friendly smack talk. Lawler apparently joked that they had been kidnapped upon arrival at their destination, causing a waiting Brady Oliveira to give the driver the business for his poor choice of attire.

Despite the heated rivalry, all parties got from point A to point B safely with a funny story to tell. They’ll find themselves on opposite sides again on Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. EDT when the Bombers (9-2) look to win a third straight Labour Day Classic against the Riders (5-5) for the first time since 1982.
