The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will have a couple of veteran defensive starters back in the lineup when they host the B.C. Lions on Thursday as Kyrie Wilson and Winston Rose make their season debuts with the team. Wilson will start at weak-side linebacker, while Rose has retaken his spot at field-side cornerback.

Wilson played four games last season before suffering a season-ending Achilles injury. The six-year veteran has recorded 96 total tackles, four sacks, and one interception over 35 career games, winning two Grey Cups as a member of the Blue Bombers.

Rose has made 182 total tackles and 17 interceptions over 60 career games as a member of the Toronto Argonauts, Ottawa Redblacks, Lions, and Blue Bombers. He was named a CFL all-star with Winnipeg in 2019 and won back-to-back Grey Cups with the team on either side of a one-year stint with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2020.

Thursday’s game is a key matchup for Winnipeg if they hope to finish atop the West Division standings for a third consecutive season.

B.C. dominated the first meeting of the season between the two teams with a 30-6 victory on June 22, meaning a win this week would secure the season series for the west coast team. Meanwhile, the Blue Bombers could move back into first place with a home win, tying the seasons series ahead of the final meeting between the two clubs on Oct. 6.

Konner Burtenshaw, who was selected with the final pick in the 2022 CFL Draft out of Queen’s University, will make his season debut after starting the year on the six-game injured list. He dressed for 10 games last season and recorded three special teams tackles and one kickoff return for 15 yards.

American defensive back Jamal Parker will not dress, while Canadian linebacker Jared Beeksma was moved to the six-game injured list due to a knee injury. Abu Daramy-Swaray, who started the last four games at field-side cornerback, has been moved to the practice roster.

The B.C. Lions (6-1) are scheduled to visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5-2) on Thursday, Aug. 3 with kickoff slated for 8:30 p.m. EDT.
