The Edmonton Elks have unveiled a new Indigenous logo created by Conrad Plews, a Metis artist of Cree background.
The logo was inspired by the design of Izaiah Masuskapoe from 2021, who was an Indigenous student at West Edmonton’s St. Thomas More Catholic Junior High School at the time of its creation. Masuskapoe created his design after the B.C. Lions unveiled an Indigenous team logo created by Kwakwaka’wakw/Tlingit artist Corrine Hunt.
“The design is largely based on the existing Elks logo, as well as the design created by Izaiah. I wanted to integrate both designs while infusing a feeling of dynamic energy and strength,” said Plews in a statement.
“Designing this logo for the Elks was an honour and I can’t wait to see it showcased as part of the team’s Indigenous Celebration night on August 10.”
The Elks will wear Plews’ logo on their helmets on Thursday, Aug. 10 when they host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Commonwealth Stadium as part of the club’s Indigenous celebration night. The logo will also be painted at midfield.
The contest will also feature the national anthem sung in Cree as well as a halftime performance by Dancing Cree. Select merchandise will be made available for purchase in the team store with all net proceeds going to Indigenous Sport Council Alberta.
