The Montreal Alouettes are getting one of the CFL’s most exciting young Canadian receivers back in the lineup when they face the Calgary Stampeders on Sunday.
Tyson Philpot is set to make his 2023 debut after missing the team’s first five games with a leg injury. Originally selected with the ninth overall pick in the 2022 CFL Draft, the University of Calgary product made an immediate impact as a rookie when he caught 39 passes for 459 yards and two touchdowns.
The Delta, B.C. native, who celebrated his 23rd birthday on Wednesday, will be immediately inserted into the starting lineup. American rookie Quartney Davis, who has six catches for 94 yards in two games, has been demoted to the practice roster as a result.
Tyson is the identical twin brother of Stampeders’ receiver Jalen Philpot, who remains on that team’s injured list following offseason surgery.
Elsewhere on the offence, the Alouettes have placed stalwart Canadian right tackle Landon Rice (hip) on the six-game injured list. He will be replaced by American Jamar McGloster, who last started a game in 2021 with the Ottawa Redblacks.
Defensively, veteran edge rusher Shawn Lemon will make his Alouettes debut after being signed a week ago to replace the recently released Nick Usher. The 34-year-old has amassed 92 career sacks in 12 CFL seasons, needing just eight more to become the 13th player in league history to reach the 100-sack plateau.
Montreal has also demoted defensive tackle Israel Antwine to the practice roster and activated backup linebacker Bryce Notree.
The Alouettes (2-3) will host the Stampeders (2-4) on Sunday, July 30 at 7:00 p.m. EDT. They are currently point favourites.
