The Saskatchewan Roughriders will induct their 2013 Grey Cup championship team and builder Wendy Kelly into the team’s Plaza of Honour during a special halftime ceremony on Saturday, October 7.
The Riders’ Plaza of Honour has previously inducted 138 individuals who have made major contributions to the club, as well as the 1966, 1989 and 2007 Grey Cup championship teams.
“I want to congratulate Wendy and the 2013 Roughriders team on their induction into the Plaza of Honour,” Roughriders’ president and CEO Craig Reynolds said in a statement. “Their remarkable contributions to the Club will forever be etched in the memories of Rider Nation and I have no doubt Wendy will be smiling down on us as we celebrate at Mosaic Stadium on October 7.”
The 2013 Riders finished second in the West Division with an 11-7 record but went on to outscore opponents 109-61 over three post-season games en route to one of the most memorable victories in franchise history. They defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 45-23 on November 24, 2013, at old Mosaic Stadium to capture the 101st Grey Cup, winning the title on home soil.
Running back Kory Sheets set a Grey Cup record with 197 rushing yards and two touchdowns, earning Most Valuable Player honours. Receiver Chris Getzlaf was named the Most Valuable Canadian after catching three passes for 78 yards.
During the regular season, safety Tyron Brackenridge, wide receiver Weston Dressler, defensive lineman Alex Hall, offensive lineman Brendon LaBatte, and Sheets were all named CFL all-stars. Defensive back Dwight Anderson, quarterback Darian Durant, defensive lineman Tearrius George, and Getzlaf were named West Division all-stars.
In honour of the team, the first 5,000 fans in attendance on October 7 will receive a replica 2013 Grey Cup ring.
Kelly, who passed away in 2018, is the first woman to be inducted into the Plaza of Honour as an individual. The Moose Jaw native served for seven years as a team nurse before becoming the first female board member in Roughriders’ history in 1993, spending three years in the role. Among her many accomplishments, she co-produced the Grey Cup Parade and halftime show in 1995, chaired the 2012 Plaza of Honour dinner committee, and served as production manager of the 2013 Grey Cup Gala.
Additional community events and fan interactions with members of the 2013 team are scheduled to take place before October 7 and will be announced in the coming weeks.
