The Hamilton Tiger-Cats will have rookie quarterback Taylor Powell under centre when they host the Toronto Argonauts on Friday, according to TSN’s Matthew Scianitti.

Powell took this field against the Edmonton Elks this past week in place of veteran quarterback Matthew Shiltz, who left the game due to injury. Scianitti reported that Shiltz will be placed on the six-game injured list this week, while Bo Levi Mitchell is still not ready to return from an adductor injury he suffered in Week 2.

Powell threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Tim White on his first career CFL throw against the Edmonton Elks this past week. He finished the game completing two-of-four pass attempts for 47 yards and one touchdown.

The six-foot-two, 207-pound passer signed with the Ticats in May. He completed 64.6 percent of his passes for 2,111 yards, 16 touchdowns, and eight interceptions at Eastern Michigan University in 2022. Powell played at Troy University in 2021 and completed 66.1 percent of his passes for 1,251 yards, seven touchdowns, and six interceptions.

The Fayetteville, Ark. native’s collegiate career started at the University of Missouri where he played 15 games over three seasons (2017-19). He completed 46 percent of his pass attempt with the Tigers for 431 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.

The Argos (4-0) will visit the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2-3) on Friday, July 21 with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m. EDT. This will mark the second of four meetings between the two teams this season, the first of which resulted in a 32-14 victory for the Argos at BMO Field.
