The Ottawa Redblacks have signed American quarterbacks Tyrrell Pigrome and Jake Dunniway following a season-ending Achilles injury to Jeremiah Masoli.

Pigrome was in training camp with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and initially made their roster as the third-string quarterback. He was released late last month when the club signed Dakota Prukop following his stint in the USFL.

The 25-year-old was a preseason sensation in Winnipeg, rushing for 45 yards against the Edmonton Elks and leading a touchdown drive against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The five-foot-ten, 200-pound passer had several stops during his NCAA career, playing at the University of Maryland (2016-19), Western Kentucky (2020), Ole Miss (2021), and Towson (2022). He threw for 1,638 yards, 14 touchdowns, and six interceptions with the Tigers this past season along with 134 carries for 574 yards and two touchdowns.

Pigrome threw for 3,380 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions with Maryland and Western Kentucky. He also ran the ball 281 times for 955 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Dunniway was in training camp with the Redblacks, appearing in the team’s final preseason game against the Argos. The 24-year-old Tracy, Calif. native only played a handful of series in the fourth quarter but completed four of his five pass attempts for 28 yards.

The main benefit of bringing back the Sacramento State product is that he would already be familiar with Ottawa’s playbook and receiving corps. Having some existing chemistry with the team’s pass-catchers wouldn’t be a bad thing at all.

The Redblacks have lost Masoli and second-year passer Tyrie Adams to season-ending injuries. Rookie quarterback Dustin Crum is expected to start this week against the Blue Bombers with veteran Nick Arbuckle serving as the primary backup.

Ottawa (1-3) will host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (4-1) on Saturday, July 15 with kickoff slated for 4:00 p.m. EDT.
