The Ottawa Redblacks will be without franchise quarterback Jeremiah Masoli again this week when they host the Edmonton Elks.
Head coach Bob Dyce told TSN 1200 in Ottawa that Tyrie Adams will start on Friday as Masoli continues to recover from a leg injury he sustained last summer. Dyce indicated that the decision came after consultation with Masoli, the team’s medical staff, general manager Shawn Burke, and himself.
“As we go forward, we just want to make sure that everything is feeling and working 100 percent and go forward from there,” said Dyce. “We just sit back, evaluate the situation weekly, and go forward from there.”
Dyce indicated that Masoli is “deeply involved” in practice mentally and physically, though he wouldn’t make any predictions regarding his availability for Week 5. He also said that Masoli has not suffered any setbacks this season.
“It’s not like he’s re-injured anything or things like that, we just want to make sure, as valuable as he is, that when he gets onto the field that he’s 100 percent ready to go,” said Dyce.
Adams took over from Arbuckle in a relief role during the club’s Week 2 loss to the Calgary Stampeders and completed nine-of-16 pass attempts for 129 yards along with four carries for 19 yards. This will mark the first career start for the second-year passer.
Nick Arbuckle will dress in a backup role on Friday. Through two starts this season, the veteran passer has thrown for 286 yards and four interceptions.
The Edmonton Elks (0-3) will visit the Ottawa Redblacks (0-2) on Friday, June 30 with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m. EDT.
