The B.C. Lions will get star receiver Lucky Whitehead back from injury when they take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Thursday, though Dominique Rhymes will miss the game due to a foot injury.
Whitehead was a full participant in practice this week, returning from a hamstring problem that kept him out of last week’s 22-0 victory over the Edmonton Elks. He made three catches for 28 yards in the club’s season-opening victory over the Calgary Stampeders.
The 31-year-old has played 43 career games as a member of the Lions and Blue Bombers, notching 192 receptions for 2,480 yards and nine touchdowns. He was named a CFL all-star in 2021, which was his first 1,000-yard season.
Rhymes is currently the club’s leading receiver, having made 12 receptions for 163 yards and three touchdowns. The six-foot-four, 215-pound target was named a CFL all-star for the first time in 2022. He will be replaced in the starting lineup by rookie target Ayden Eberhardt, who made three catches for 47 yards in his CFL debut last week.
B.C. lost the three-game regular season series between the two clubs in 2022 by a margin of 2-1. The teams met again in the West Final at IG Field where the Blue Bombers won 28-20 to punch their ticket to the Grey Cup in Regina.
Thursday’s game between the CFL’s only 2-0 teams is slated for 8:30 p.m. EDT at IG Field in Winnipeg.
