The Calgary Stampeders will start Jake Maier under centre in their preseason finale against the B.C. Lions on Thursday despite sending a relatively young club out west. The third-year quarterback started last week’s preseason win over the Edmonton Elks but completed only one pass for six yards.
Maier will operate behind an offensive line comprised entirely of backups, while Tre Odoms-Dukes and Luther Hakunavanhu are the only two projected starters who will dress in the receiving corps. CFL all-star running back Ka’Deem Carey will also not make the trip out west with Dedrick Mills getting the start in the backfield.
The Stampeders are resting a number of projected starters on defence, including their entire starting defensive line. Canadian linebacker Cameron Judge will not dress in the linebacking corps, while Natrell Jamerson and Brad Muhammad are the only two starters from a week ago who will dress against the Lions.
Five-time CFL all-star placekicker Rene Paredes will also not make the trip to Vancouver with Toshiki Sato and Campbell Fair expected to handle the kicking duties. Sato spent the 2021 season with the Toronto Argonauts, while Fair was a sixth-round pick in the 2023 CFL Draft out of the University of Ottawa.
Calgary will visit the B.C. Lions for their second and final preseason game on Thursday, June 1 with kickoff slated for 10:30 p.m. EDT.
